SKYBRIDGE KLCC

The towers feature a skybridge between the two towers on 41st and 42nd floors, which is the highest 2-story bridge in the world. It is not directly bolted to the main structure, but is instead designed to slide in and out of the towers to prevent it from breaking during high winds. The bridge is 170 m (558 ft) above the ground and 58 m (190 ft) long, weighing 750 tons. The same floor is also known as the podium, since visitors desiring to go to higher levels have to change elevators here. The skybridge is open to all visitors, but free passes (limited to 1700 people per day) must be obtained on a first-come, first-served basis.[20] Visitors are only allowed on the 41st floor as the 42nd floor can only be used by the tenants of the building.

The skybridge also acts as a safety device, so that in the event of a fire or other emergency in one tower, tenants can evacuate by crossing the skybridge to the other tower. The total evacuation triggered by a bomb hoax on September 12, 2001 (the day after the September 11 attacks destroyed the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City) showed that the bridge would not be useful if both towers need to be emptied simultaneously, as the capacity of the staircases was insufficient for such an event. Plans thus call for the lifts to be used if both towers need to be evacuated, and a successful drill following the revised plan was conducted in 2005.

TUGU NEGARA

Tugu Negara, literally the "National Monument" in Malay, is a sculpture that commemorates those who died in Malaysia's struggle for freedom, principally against the Japanese occupation during World War II and the Malayan Emergency , which lasted from 1948 until 1960. It is located in the Federal capital, Kuala Lumpur. The Malaysian Houses of Parliament is situated near the monument. The monument depicts a group of soldiers holding the Malaysian national flag, the Jalur Gemilang, aloft. Each of the bronze figures symbolizes leadership, suffering, unity, vigilance, strength, courage and sacrifice.

Every year on July 31, Hari Pahlawan (Heroes Day), the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the Prime Minister and heads of military and the police would pay their respects to the fallen heroes by laying garlands at the monument. The original national monument was not the one in the form of human figures but was a cenotaph that was situated in the middle of a roundabout. The British administration set up the first monument, a 10m flat grass-covered ground to commemorate the wars and honour the fallen heroes from World War I, World War II and the Malayan Emergency.

It was moved to the present site during the construction of a flyover in 1964 connecting Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin and the Parliament roundabout. Therefore the original name for Jalan Tugu, where the Tugu Negara is currently situated, was Cenotaph Road.On the monument, it is written “To Our Glorious Dead with dates of the First World War (1914-1918), Second World War (1939-1945) and the Emergency (1948-1960).

The monument was later replaced with the Tugu Negara, an idea mooted by Malaysia's first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj and was commissioned in 1963.The huge tall bronze figures of soldiers standing and supporting their fallen comrades, which is opposite Lake Gardens, are the work of sculptor Felix de Weldon, who also did Washington’s Iwo Jima Monument and it is regarded as the largest bronze monument grouping in the world. The Tugu Negara was completed and officially opened on February 8, 1966, by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. It was proclaimed a memorial park dedicated to the 11,000 people who died during the 12-year Malayan Emergency (1948-1960). Thereafter, a wreath-laying ceremony takes place at the monument every July 31 on Warriors Day.

Constructed in 1966, the monument is 15 meters ( 49.21 feet) tall, made of bronze and was designed by Austrian sculptor Felix de Weldon, who was also responsible for the famed USMC War Memorial in Virginia, United States. The granite base of the monument bears only inscriptions in English with Roman script and Malay with Jawi script:

"Dedicated to the heroic fighters in the cause of peace and freedom,
May the blessing of Allah be upon them"

In 27 August 1975, the monument suffered extensive damage due to an explosion set off by a communist terrorist. It has since been restored to its original state on 11 May 1977. A fence was then erected and the complex was declared a protected area between sunset and dawn. Every day at dusk, a soldier raises the national flag and lowers it at dawn.

AIN ARABIA

Close to the shopping malls Sungei Wang / Bukit Bintang is a new area called: Ain Arabia. It's just beside the well-know Irish pub Finnegan's at the Jalan Sultan Ismail is a little street. In that little street is a concrete arch with the name: Ain Arabia. There's also a signs with that name on it.

In the months of July, August and September the temperatures rise in the Middle East up to 45 - 47 degrees. That becomes too much for the Arabs. That's the time they book then a holiday to a cooler country, which is Malaysia. In that period there are also school holidays in the Middle East..To make these people feel at home, the people of Kuala Lumpur have created an Arab district. The KL City Hall decided to make the visitors feel at home by recreating a sanctuary of Arabian style. Modelled mainly in the Moroccan architecture, 20% of the manpower engaged was from the Middle East to ensure the authenticity of the design and work.

The literal translation is Eye Arab (the grammatically correct version should read al Ain Arabiya which would translate to "The Eye of Arabia"). After 30 meters you'll see at the left side the Fortuna Hotel with it's famous restaurant "Sahara Tent". This is the centre of "Ain Arabia".Since Ala H. Salih set up the Sahara Tent restaurant at the Fortuna Hotel five years ago, tourists, embassy officials and students have been making a beeline to al Mantaga al Arabiya or "the Arabian area".The literal translation is Eye Arab (the grammatically correct version should read al Ain Arabiya which would translate to "The Eye of Arabia").The draw of the restaurant may be due to the 20 per cent increase in tourist arrivals from the Middle East between July, August and September.

There's also an Arab barber to cut hair the way Arab men like it. Not many barbers in Kuala Lumpur are good at trimming beards. Some Arab men need to have their facial hair removed by threading. For some, this has to be done every three days.Apart from the barbers shop, the other four shops adjacent to the Fortuna Hotel are a mini market, a travel agency, two souvenir shops and the Hay-al Arab Restaurant, which serves Yemeni cuisine.Naab’s mini market stocks products like canned tomatoes, bottled olives, Lebanese bread, a variety of cheeses and dates. The Jet Connections travel agency’s clientele is 90 per cent Arab. They opt for local tours to Penang, Langkawi and Genting Highlands. The al-Khaima souvenir shop stocks Arabic music CDs, VCDs, shisha pipes, tobacco, perfume oils and incense wood chips.

Fronting Hotel Fortuna and Sahara Tent is a small plot of land, dotted with concrete benches, stalls and monuments, popular in the evenings with Malaysians and people from the Middle East.

BUTTERFLY PARK

The Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park is situated near the Lake Gardens. The park is an imitation of the butterfly's natural habitat. It includes more than 15,000 plants from 100 species that have been used to recreate a Malaysian rainforest atmosphere. There is a nursery and breeding area for the butterflies. To prevent the butterfly's from escaping the whole park is covered by a net. Don't pay attention to that, because it's high above you.

Enjoy a glimpse of more than 6,000 butterflies of over 120 species at this unique park roam and fly freely in a simulated natural rainforest environment. You can also take rest along the limestone paths in the butterfly park.Butterfly's fly around you and here and there they have placed some fruits, like pineapple.

I have visited many Butterfly Parks (on Penang and in the Cameron Highlands), but no one was as beautiful as this one.You can see the butterfly's resting on the leaves of the plants. Sometimes they rest on you!The views from the gazebo are spectacular. Here you can learn about the life cycle and mating habit of the butterflies. There is a nursery and breeding area, as well as an insect museum to enhance your knowledge about these creepy-crawlers.

Comprising the beautiful landscape are flower and fruit plants and some rare herbs essential in the diet and pollinating activities of the butterflies.

On your way out you go through an informative insect museum, where you can also see some living animals. After the museum you come into a souvenir shop, where you can buy local handicrafts, frames butterflies and beetles.Facilities include an informative insect museum.

MONOLOGUES OF RAJA SHAHRIMAN

GALERI PETRONAS’ highly anticipated new exhibition, Rhythm of the 21st Century – Monologues of Raja Shahriman, was officially launched on 3 November 2009 by YABhg Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. The exhibition showcases the latest artworks by Raja Shahriman Raja Aziddin, one of Malaysia’s foremost contemporary sculptors, featuring 20 new large-scale sculptures, 45 drawings and 15 paintings in a compelling show that symbolises the destructive nature of man. The show is the artist’s sixth solo exhibition and is his largest to date.

Rhythm of the 21st Century brings together for the first time the most varied artworks by Raja Shahriman in the form of sculptures, paintings and drawings. The exhibition is also a debut of sorts for the artist’s paintings, which are shown for the first time in Malaysia. His drawings have been featured earlier in the Semangat Besi and Nafas exhibitions at GALERI PETRONAS, but in fewer numbers.

Rhythm of the 21st Century reflects the notion that it is the innate nature of man to continually engage in conflicts in this new century, as it has been throughout the ages. The exhibition hinges upon the idea that man has the capacity to build, destroy, then begin to re-build by picking up the pieces, only to have it destroyed again – a vicious cycle mankind seems to be trapped in.This exhibition presents a reminder of man’s destructive nature in its extremes, the combination of human nature, innovation and lessons from past mistakes has served mankind positively in many areas.

As Raja Shahriman continues to translate man’s inner battles with violence and aggression through his works, the sculptures in his latest series demonstrate his mastery of the medium and his technical excellence.Raja Shahriman is the first Malaysian sculptor to have his own solo exhibition and has the most number of solo shows. He is also the only Malaysian sculptor whose artworks – namely Tapak Sembah from the Langkah Hulubalang series and Semangat Besi No. 32 from the Semangat Besi series – have been accepted for sale by the leading auction house, Christie’s.

Born in 1967 in Kuala Kangsar, Perak, Raja Shahriman graduated from MARA Institute of Technology (now UiTM). He works mainly in metal and is also a trained keris-maker. Known for his series of dramatic sculptures, he has represented Malaysia in numerous major international exhibitions.

Rhythm of the 21st Century exhibition runs from 29 October 2009 till 24 January 2010 at GALERI PETRONAS, Level 3, Suria KLCC. Admission is free.

SULTAN ABDUL SAMAD BUILDING

The Sultan Abdul Samad Building is located in front of the Dataran Merdeka - literally the Independence Square - and the Royal Selangor Club, by Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The structure takes its name from Sultan Abdul Samad, the reigning sultan of Selangor at the time when construction began.

Topped by a shiny copper dome and a 40m high clock tower, it is a major landmark in the city. It serves as the backdrop for important events such as the National Day Parade on August 31 and the ushering in of the New Year. This heritage building used to be occupied by the then Apex Court of Malaysia, the Supreme Court which was subsequently renamed the Federal Court. The Court of Appeal was also housed in this historic building. The Federal Court and the Court of Appeals have since moved to the Palace of Justice located in Putrajaya, the new Federal administrative capital. The Sultan Abdul Samad Building now houses the Commercial Division of the High Court of Malaya.

It was designed by A.C. Norman and built in 1894-1897 to house several important government departments during the British administration. A.C. Norman spent time in Africa and saw Muslim mosques in India which led him to use Moorish architecture in the building's design.

In 1945, when World War II ended, Britain resumed control again, but Malaya's independence movement had matured and organized itself in an alliance under Tunku Abdul Rahman. When the British flag was finally lowered in Kuala Lumpur's Merdeka Square in 1957, Tunku became the first prime minister of Malaya.
